After years of doing all the tourist vacation hot spots such as Disney etc. my family decided it was time to get back to the basics. We really didn’t have to look far. Luray,Virginia is close to Washington,DC and has much to offer as a quality family vacation without breaking the bank. First there is the famous Luray Caverns that are sure to wow you with their odd shapes and eerie noises as you walk through the underground caverns. There is also an antique car museum on site that you can buy a combined admission for both. After that you have to see Skyline Drive.
Skyline Drive is the highway that snakes along the Blue Ridge mountains. It offers breathtaking views of the Shenandoah river and valley. There are many hiking trails along skyline drive and the pass to get into the park is good for seven days. You are likely to see many deer along the drive and hike. One of our family hikes we came across a family of seven black bears. As long as you don’t disturb them they just continue on their way. The waterfalls in the park are over 100 feet in some places and come to a cool pool that you can wade in to refresh yourself before hiking back up the trail.Make sure to bring lots of water although the hikes are shaded its important to keep on drinking.
At night we rented a cabin and the kids loved the hot tub. The cabins are not like sleeping in a outdoor tent, they offer many luxuries. From the cable tv,to the jacuuzi, to the central air there are plenty of comforts even away from home. Outside the kids helped gather wood and we made a fire in the firepit and roasted hots dogs and marshmallows. The next day we took tubes and went tubing down the scenic Shenadoah river. We only had three days but all agreed we could have stayed for a week. We have been going back for ten years now and try something new every year but the basics never change. Virginia is a beautiful place, refreshing vacation and we love it just like the first time we went.
